There are several different types of massage available in spas around the world, each designed to target different problems you are having with your muscles, but all with the same aim; to help you completely relax.
A four handed massage – or Purva Karma – has been proven to shift you into a further state of relaxation beyond that of other treatments, which in turn means your muscles are more receptive to the deeper movements. Whether you are suffering from aches and pains, stiffness or immobility, this therapy is perfect for you.
We’ve scoured the globe to bring this exciting massage to The Spa at Hale Country Club.
What is a four handed massage?
A four handed massage is performed by two therapists in synchronization and has the same effect as two full body massages.
The therapists will combine slow and relaxing motions with harder, deeper movements to target each of your problems whilst keeping you completely relaxed. Because of this, it is not unusual to experience other types of massage during this treatment, including deep tissue, deep cleansing and even reflexology.
How does it work?
The addition of two extra hands means your brain is unable to predict or monitor the motions and pressures of all four hands. This means you are in a better state of mind to ‘let go’ during the treatment and will allow your muscles to absorb and react to the therapy.
Typically, the therapists will base their massage around long, slow sweeping movements that will put your whole body into a state of relaxation. They will then add some targeted techniques to break down the build up of tissue around your muscles that cause pain, aches and inflammation.
What are its benefits?
By combining different types of massage, this treatment has a range of benefits:
- It eases, lengthens and realigns muscles by applying a combination of pressure point work, deep tissue techniques and superficial massaging
- It engages both brain hemispheres by stimulating the logical and emotional sides of your brain
- The intensity of synchronised movements enhances blood circulation which helps break down tissue build up
- It offers your muscles, mind and soul for a more fulfilling experience
After the massage
As with every massage, you can expect to feel stiff and even tender after a Purva Karma four handed massage, but this will subside after a couple of days and you should feel more relaxed than ever.
If you want to reduce the tenderness, warm your muscles up with a bath, a heat pack, or even in our wellness pool! Once your muscles are warm, we also recommend dynamic stretching to release some of the tenderness and to further lengthen your muscles.
It is also essential to stay hydrated before and after the treatment to ensure you get the best results!
As you have engaged both brain hemispheres, your mind is going to be more in sync with your body i.e. when you are making decisions, it will be easier to listen to both your heart and your mind.
As a four handed massage is predominately a Swedish massage, you can have this therapy up to five times a week. However, we would recommend speaking to your therapist before undergoing several treatments.
