Strawberries and cream; Grunts and groans; Pristinely cut grass and vibrant yellow balls; a host of ballboys and ballgirls, surrounded by players dressed all in white.
And maybe some rain too.
That quintessential British tennis tournament is about to begin at the prestigious All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club – Wimbledon 2015.
Wimbledon is an absolute institution in this country, and July wouldn’t be complete without the annual tournament which draws crowds from around the world – including all those lucky members at Hale who secured tickets through our annual ballot.
About The Wimbledon Championships
One of the four Grand Slam tournaments in the tennis sporting calendar, Wimbledon is the oldest professional tennis tournament in the world, with competitive matches first played in 1877.
It’s the only major competition played on grass, hence the name lawn being synonymous with the tournament. Despite its name, the All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club hasn’t seen any games of croquet played here for over a century.
Throughout the two week tournament, the biggest and best stars of tennis will compete for the most prestigious title in the sport. Over 142,000 portions of English strawberries will be consumed during the event, alongside 230,000 glasses of Pimms and 28,000 bottles of Champagne.
55,000 balls are typically used in The Championships, with them changed every 9 games. The yellow ones were used for the first time in 1986, and must be stored at a controlled temperature of 68℉. If the roof of Centre Court was closed, 290 million balls would fit into the stadium!
For Those Hale Members Attending
We were fortunate enough to secure 32 pairs of tickets in the Wimbledon ballet this year, which means that 64 members (and their families) will be heading down to London to enjoy this amazing spectacle of sporting prowess and British culture.
We hope you all have a fantastic time and enjoy yourself – the strawberries are fine, but go easy on the cream! And those of you who got Centre Court tickets, make sure you take some celebrity pictures and share them with us all!
